Chinese Dating Rules Exposed!

Chinese culture being markedly different from western culture this is no less the case when it comes to dating Chinese women. Take for example the western etiquette of allowing the woman to make her choice of food at a restaurant; to most western males this would seem to be a ‘must’, and to be honest trying to do this the opposite way would probably result in the western female considering a man to be exceptionally rude and she certainly would be unlikely to want to date him again, and rightly so; but in Chinese culture there are times where the man is most definitely expected to take the lead, and him choosing the food would be considered desirable. 1. ‘No-go’ topics of conversation Vs. acceptable topics. It’s a strange thing when I see some writers writing about topics of conversation that shouldn’t be mentioned with Chinese women, because in actual fact Chinese culture is very accepting of almost any topic of conversation including money in most situations, even with virtual strangers! The only subject in my experience that is mostly a no-go, is ‘sex’ (but that’s not by any means always the case!).

2. Physical contact. In truth physical contact between non-intimates is, in formal Confucian influenced Chinese culture, frowned upon, and this can include simple encouraging touches on the shoulder. But, in actual practice it is very common, but it’s all about the degree (and where!)*. If you’re already a very ‘touchy-feely’ person then I would just suggest you reduce it by about seventy-five percent and you will probably be at the comfortable and actually appreciated level, for most Chinese women.

3. Punctuality. Now this is a tricky one, as to be honest Chinese women are not always the most punctual of types to tell you the truth! I’ve waited for thirty minutes in temperatures of minus twenty degrees for example. In this case, being a male, you’re probably just going to have to bite the bullet and make the assumption she will turn up on-time, but I have to say, if she does show up on-time it’s probably just because she figures it’s your culture to do so and she’s doing you a favor (I’m not kidding). Western time-keeping doesn’t always translate to be the same as Chinese time-keeping!

There are many more points than these to be aware of; in fact, where Chinese culture is concerned in comparison to western culture, the dating rules have far, far more nuances you need to make yourself aware of in my experience.
